Big Sewickley Creek Watershed GIS Development

Geospatial data development and cartographic products for a Rivers Conservation and Stewardship Plan (RCP) in a watershed.

In 2020, Allegheny Land Trust completed work on a Rivers Conservation and Stewardship Plan (RCP) for the Big Sewickley Creek Watershed (BSCW) that aimed to create a better public understanding of the watershed and its natural and cultural assets. As part of this effort, CivicMapper was tasked to provide Esri ArcGIS Online mapping resources to support the development of the RCP. CivicMapper's approach involved data procurement from Allegheny Land Trust, DCNR, and other public data sources in order to create a set of 8 thematic maps that contained numerous data layers used as a basis for derivative map production and publication.

Some of the data layers required various levels of development and conditioning before mapping, as in the case of Topography where options for slope needed to be defined, and Geology where sub-categories needed to be extracted from various existing maps or other sources. We also collected and digitized hardcopy maps and georeferenced these for incorporation into the GIS. CivicMapper provided support for the development of a Story Map used by Allegheny Land Trust for reporting and public outreach purposes.
