Osoyoos Cumulative Effects Mapping

Understanding 150 years of landscape change in southern British Columbia

Working with Olson Studio, CivicMapper helped to develop a spatial cumulative effects framework for use in understanding and communicating the impacts of changing settlement patterns on ecological and cultural values near Osoyoos, British Columbia over the past 150 years. The team identified indicators of ecological and cultural values, and developed models to understand, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the impacts of land use changes over time. The team created pre-settlement, present-day, and future settlement scenario base maps that served as the basis for understanding changes in general landscape indicators such as fragmentation, connectivity, and natural vegetation patch size over the period. The mapping products created by CivicMapper were used to evaluate and visualize the effects of land-use change since colonization, as well as to inform future land-use decision-making on the Osoyoos Indian Band (OIB).
